The Albert Schweitzer Foreign English Teacher program successfully began over six years ago by the King Car foundation. At that time, 19 teachers went to teach in various rural schools districts after the government mandated all children to learn English. To this day, students from the Advanced Training Institute are still being requested as English teachers. A number of private foundations and rural school districts work together to bring these creative, enthusiastic, and loving teachers from America. The following work description is general and varies from district to district.
The teachers will generally work under the direction of a Taiwanese teacher but most of the time English teachers will conduct classes and lectures. They will need to create lesson plans that help achieve the goals of the school. Basic knowledge of English language is a requirement, and the ability to deliver English lessons.
In Pingdong, there is an English Village within a school. Students of elementary schools are brought in to learn conversation English. In Hualien and Yunlin there are two Character English Institutes. Fourth grade students are brought to the Institute for a whole week to learn both character and English.
Each district will have teams from two to eight people who will work together. The districts provide housing and lunch meals throughout the week along with a monthly stipend paid in Taiwan currency. Each teacher will be responsible for twenty to twenty-five teaching hours per week, depending on the school district they work for.
TESOL Certification
You can attend our TESOL course at the Oklahoma Training Center during the summer. Also, you can complete the course by attending a class at your local community college or by taking it online. For more information about TESOL, please contact Katie Pleckham at tesol@opportunities.iblp.org.
Important Information
The length of commitment is generally eleven months from the end of August until the end of July the following year. The TESOL teachers will be under contract with the local school, even though they are considered to be volunteers. Most districts provide two-week vacation, where the teachers will have the opportunity to learn about culture, religion, language, and history.
Applicants are also approved based on their Medical History. Please fill out the medical form portion of the application. It is wise for you to provide your own medical evacuation insurance. Go on-line to find "medical insurance for international travelers." The premium for young people is inexpensive. Should you become ill or injured, and evacuation to the U.S. required you or your family will be responsible for these costs. Note: Medical costs you may incur in Taiwan are covered by the host agency.
While not required, the selection of teachers is influenced if your experience (resume) shows you have attended an Advanced Seminar; served as a teacher at a Children's Institute, or with Character First, teaching children; you are familiar with the Commands of Christ and 49 Character Qualities.
