Applying the Character Quality of Security

Security vs. Anxiety

3 min

Security is knowing that God will never leave us nor forsake us and that whatever we give to Him will become an eternal treasure.

The Greek word for carefulness is amerimnos. It means “free from anxiety, free from care, secure.” This was Paul’s desire for the church at Corinth: “I would have you without carefulness” (I Corinthians 7:32).

Another word for security is confidence. “In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength” (Isaiah 30:15). The Hebrew word for confidence is derived from the root word batach, which means “to attach oneself, to trust, confide in, feel safe, be confident, secure; to be careless.”

The Value of Security

In every person’s heart, there is a deep longing for security. Unfortunately, we tend to look for security in temporal things that perish, such as money, possessions, or people, rather than in eternal realities that cannot be taken away. Ironically, the very things we depend on for security produce insecurity and anxiety.

The key to security is building our lives around that which can never be destroyed or taken away. Only God and His Word qualify as the foundations of security. By believing on the Lord Jesus Christ, we secure eternal life and have the assurance that when we die we will go to be with the Lord in heaven.

The key to security is building our lives around that which can never be destroyed or taken away.

Foundations of Security

Every believer has the security of the Lord in the following specific ways:

Secure in His love

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38–39). “Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee” (Jeremiah 31:3).

Secure in His fellowship

“… I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (Matthew 28:20). “For he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5). “God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord” (I Corinthians 1:9). “Truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ” (I John 1:3).

Secure in His Spirit

“Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts” (II Corinthians 1:22). “For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15). “In whom ye also trusted … in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians 1:13).

Secure in His hand

“My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand” (John 10:29). “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness” (Isaiah 41:10). “I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee …” (Isaiah 42:6).

Secure in His protection

“For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day” (II Timothy 1:12). “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust … He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust …” (Psalm 91:1–4). “But the Lord is faithful, who shall establish you, and keep you from evil” (II Thessalonians 3:3).

Secure in His Body

“So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another” (Romans 12:5). “There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Ephesians 4:4–6).

Secure in His family

“Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him” (Psalm 103:13). “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together” (Romans 8:16–17).

Personal Evaluation

  • Do you put your confidence in your heavenly Father’s love for you?
  • Do you focus on the things of the Lord throughout the day?
  • Do you have fellowship with God’s Spirit, and does He control your life?
  • Is your desire for a closer walk with the Lord greater than your desire for material things?
  • Do you concentrate more on spiritual strength rather than on building physical strength?
  • If you lost all your possessions, would you still sense a completeness in Christ?
