Equipping Musicians for Exellence

August 20, 2019

The Scripture being sung brought tears to the eyes of the listeners. With joy and vibrancy, the 2019 Sound Foundations Class musically proclaimed, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing. . . .” On August 1, in their Sound Foundations graduation concert, nearly fifty young people presented a college-level performance to the attendees of the Big Sandy July Family Conference. From the music of Handel’s Messiah to Mendelssohn’s Elijah, plus other sacred selections, the class graduates sang out in jubilant praise to God.

With a goal to equip musicians for excellence in ministry, Sound Foundations provides training in music theory, history, Scripture songwriting, conducting, choir, ensemble playing, and more. Course highlights for students included participating in string and piano master classes under Daniel Ziesemer and Anna Ferraro, learning original lyrics creation and setting to music with Susannah Hulin, doing hands-on children’s music ministry team projects with the Dick Bogner family, and investing much time in examining musical topics within a Biblical framework under the leadership of Aaron Baker, David Waller, Carol Blair, and others.

Mornings began with devotions in Colossians chapter three. Classes were attended throughout the day, and evenings were devoted to times of students doing homework in preparation for future application. The students persevered through stretching assignments and finished the vigorous three-week courses strong. In just twenty days, beginning to advanced musicians alike grew by leaps and bounds.

One student, Katrina from Pennsylvania, shared, “Sound Foundations prepared me for so much more than I could have possibly imagined! The courses and instructors not only improved my musical skills but also kept the focus on Jesus Christ and honoring Him in everything I perform or participate in with music.”

Another student, Kimberly from Oklahoma, commented, “I had always wanted to write my own songs, but didn’t think I could. I wasn’t a songwriter. But when I came to Sound Foundations and was given the tools and a deadline, I did it! God blessed me with a song and made me a songwriter.”

Finally, Carter from Minnesota noted, “Sound Foundations was the spark I needed to begin using my musical talents for the glory of God! The Lord showed me in a powerful way that I could write, play, and orchestrate music to honor Him!”
