If I’m single and living on my own, do I still need to honor my parents?
First, be sure that God has led you to move away from your parents. When God designed the family structure, He purposed that each one in the family meet basic needs for others—especially social needs. When a single person leaves his family, he should be aware that most likely he will face temptations to wrongly fulfill his social needs. He especially needs to be alert to danger and walk in the light of God’s guidance at every turn.
Maintain good lines of communication with your parents, and solicit their counsel regularly. In Scripture, we are challenged to heed the counsel of our parents, regardless of our age or position in life. (See Proverbs 6:20–24 and 23:22.)
