Jesus Christ is today exactly Who He has always been. The Christ Who walked through the narrow streets of Capernaum is the same Christ Who is willing to make His abode with you. Twenty centuries have not changed Him. We can rest assured of the truth recorded in Hebrews 13:8, that our Lord Jesus Christ is “the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”
It is important to understand that mankind views time differently from how God sees time. As created beings, we are locked in time. We cannot see the past nor the future other than as memories of days gone by or in anticipation of things to come. God, however, lives outside of time. He can see the past and the future as clearly as He sees the present.
Are you perplexed by the problems facing you today? As the writer of the hymn “Be Still My Soul” expressed so well,
Be still, my soul! your God does undertake
To guide the future as he has the past;
Your hope, your confidence, let nothing shake;
all now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul! the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while he lived below.
Realize that our Lord Jesus is the same Lord before Whom all problems vanish. How does His immutability, His changelessness, strengthen us to face our problems and conflicts?
He is the same God as He was yesterday
As God sees time, when our Lord walked upon earth was only “yesterday.” According to Psalm 90:4, “For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night” (emphasis added). We cannot change our yesterdays. But we serve the Lord Jesus, Who is the Master of yesterday, and Who owns today and forever.
Seeing as our timeless God sees, it was only yesterday that Jesus walked upon the water. It was only yesterday when He stood in the boat and said, “Peace be still.” It was only yesterday when Jesus walked to the deathbed of a little girl in Capernaum and said, “Talitha cumi.” Just yesterday, our Lord Jesus opened the eyes of the blind, cleansed the leper, and made the lame to walk! Only yesterday our triumphant Lord conquered death and rose from the dead! He is risen!
He is the same God today
Who Jesus was yesterday, He still is today! He has the same power, the same authority, and the same wisdom. What He did yesterday in Capernaum, He can do today in your little village, wherever it might be. Have you ever awakened in the morning and wondered if Jesus was aware of the challenges you would be facing that very day? Yes! Absolutely, He knows.
Our Lord Jesus is the Master of today. When He was threatened by Herod Antipas, Jesus said to His disciples “Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day I shall be perfected” (Luke 13:32, emphasis added). When Jesus called Zacchaeus out of the sycamore tree, He said, “Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house” (Luke 19:5, emphasis added). When our Lord spoke to the thief hanging beside Him on the cross, He said, “To day shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43, emphasis added).
He is the same God forever
What Jesus was yesterday and today, He will be forever. Have you ever wondered about what troubles or tribulations your children or grandchildren may face or worried about what may happen to them when you are gone from this life? Fear not! Our Lord Jesus will be there for them. Just as He was with your grandparents, He will also be with your grandchildren.
The angel Gabriel told Mary, the mother of Jesus, “And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end” (Luke 1:33, emphasis added). Concerning Himself, Jesus said, “And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever” (John 8:35, emphasis added). Finally, our Lord promised His disciples before His ascension, “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (Matthew 28:20, emphasis added).
In the constant march of time, today soon becomes yesterday, and tomorrow becomes today. Forever is merely made up of a daily procession of todays. Through all this change of time and circumstance, our Lord Jesus Christ is the universal constant. He is always the same, and His years have no beginning or end.
Are you anxious about tomorrow? Are you concerned for the welfare of future generations? Rest confidently in the fact that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. This exhortation is well-stated in the aforementioned hymn, “Be Still My Soul”:
Be still, my soul! the hour is hast’ning on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still my soul! when change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.
