When the Lord Jesus Christ walked on earth, He demonstrated very clearly His divine attribute of infinity. He had infinite authority over sin, sickness, Satan, nature, and ultimately, over life and death. He is infinite in time, having no beginning and no end. Jesus is infinite in glory; His name will endure forever, even after all earthly thrones have crumbled and all human glory is burned away.
According to Mark 4:39, Christ rebuked the wind and said unto the stormy Sea of Galilee, “Peace, be still.” The disciples, fearful in the midst of the storm, marveled at His power to simply speak peace and a storm be stilled. They said to each other, “What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” (Mark 4:41, emphasis added). This profound question could be inscribed over the life and influence of the Lord Jesus: “What manner of man is this?”
Jesus is infinite in authority
Before He ascended to Heaven, Christ announced to His disciples, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18). With these profound words, our Lord announced His unlimited power in the spiritual as well as the physical world.
Jesus the Great Physician has authority over disease. According to Matthew 4:23, Matthew tells us that Christ healed “all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.” In Biblical times, leprosy was an incurable disease. Yet Jesus cleansed lepers on numerous occasions in Galilee and in Samaria.
Jesus our Savior has authority over sin. When the crippled man was lowered down from the roof into the crowded room where Jesus was preaching, the Lord astonished everyone present by announcing, “Man, thy sins are forgiven thee” (Luke 5:20). The scribes and Pharisees immediately reacted to this statement, according to the next verse, “Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?” Christ confidently answered their speculations with these words: “What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house” (Luke 5:22–24). The visible miracle proved the invisible one, and the Son of Man demonstrated His authority to forgive sins.
Jesus, the Son of God, has authority over Satan. On the rugged eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee lived the demoniac of Gadara. He was a wild, naked man that dwelt among tombs. The demon-possessed man also could break the iron fetters placed upon him! Yet, according to Luke 8:35, the townsmen found this same man “sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind.” Christ’s power was greater than that of the evil one.
The witnesses always testified after such confrontations, “What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out” (Luke 4:36). Twenty centuries later, Jesus still has the power over Satan, and He is able to deliver and cleanse any man, woman, boy, or girl who seeks freedom from demonic oppression!
Jesus, the Prince of Life, manifested His authority over death. He stopped a funeral procession in the village of Nain and touched the casket with the command, “Young man, I say unto thee, Arise” (Luke 7:14). At the bedside of the dead daughter of Jairus, Jesus said, “Damsel, I say unto thee, arise” (Mark 5:41). Jesus cried with a loud voice at the tomb of Lazarus: “Lazarus, come forth” (John 11:43). In these three specific cases, Christ’s authority over death yielded renewed life to each one.
Jesus personally defeated death forever on the day that He rose from the grave and showed Himself alive to His disciples with the words, “It is I myself” (Luke 24:39). How can we fear death when Christ has conquered our last enemy? We have a sure hope that Jesus is the Lord of life!
Jesus is infinite in time
In Jerusalem, our Lord Jesus told a hostile group of Jewish leaders, “If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me” (John 8:42). As the discussion continued, the Jews proudly scoffed at the claims of Jesus and claimed Abraham as their father. Jesus replied, “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad” (John 8:56).
The Jewish leaders considered this statement as utterly preposterous. In response, they mocked Jesus, saying, “Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?” (John 8:57). Our Lord answered with perfect clarity and confidence. “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58). By invoking the Divine name, I AM, and by removing Himself from the bondage of time, Jesus asserted very clearly the fact that He is infinite in time.
Jesus is infinite in glory
Near the end of His high priestly prayer, our Lord Jesus expressed His longing for the day when He would be with His Father in glory. “Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world” (John 17:24).
One day, we will see the Son of God in the fullness of His glory. Jesus often encouraged His disciples with the knowledge that one day, although He was despised and rejected on earth, He would be seated in the glory of His Father. He told them in Matthew 25:31, “When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory.”
One glorious day, we also will see Jesus as He is—the King in His beauty, the Ancient of Days, the Sun of Righteousness, and the King of Glory!
In comparison, earthly lights, even the strongest and brightest searchlights, become dimmer and dimmer as the distance is multiplied. This phenomenon is called flux—the fading of light and energy over distance. But the glory of our Lord Jesus is without flux. Christ’s glory shines and will shine forever, undimmed and unfading over the farthest expanses of time and space! He is infinite, and His glory endures forever.
