Honoring Grandparents at Your Wedding

Contentment Before Marriage

2 min

So many things—and people—must be remembered when planning a wedding. Parents are often at the center of wedding planning, and they often bear the responsibility and expenses of the wedding details. Previously, we have considered seeking input and involvement from siblings. Yet, another important set of relatives are sometimes overlooked. What about the grandparents?

In the Word of God, Godly grandparents are held in high honor. They have a role in teaching and guiding their “children’s children” in the ways of the Lord. Here are some practical considerations of ways that the role of grandparents can be honored in a wedding ceremony.

Grandparents can be given special seating at the start of the ceremony

It is an honorable practice to have the ushers—and in some cases, even the groom himself—escort his grandmothers down the aisle to special seats of honor for them in the front. Even if confined to a wheelchair or aided with a walker, the grandparent should still be given a place of honor where the reverence due to the “hoary head” can be publicly displayed.

Grandfathers can be given an opportunity to pray

In the busy time of seeking counsel and guidance from pastors, friends, siblings, and parents, be sure not to fail to ask Godly grandparents for their counsel and advice on marriage, too. They often have more experience than anyone else in your life!

Grandparents often sit quietly and observe, not speaking unless asked. Don’t hesitate to draw out wisdom from such a deep well of life wisdom that they possess. Brides and grooms who are blessed to have a Godly grandfather would do well to consider asking him to take an important part in the wedding. What an honor to have a God-fearing grandfather willing to pray a blessing upon the young couple as part of the ceremony!

Grandmothers can be given a rose as a token of love and respect

Many brides and grooms choose to give a rose to the mothers during the ceremony as a token of appreciation. If this is done, consider also giving a rose as a token of gratitude to grandmothers as well. They have invested years in the encouragement of the next generation! It is very appropriate and honorable for a bride, in the bloom and sparkle of youth, to give a token of gratitude to her grandmother.

Departed grandparents can be honored by a display of pictures

When grandparents have gone on to their eternal reward before the wedding, a couple still could honor their elders’ influence and to preserve their legacy. It may be appropriate to find a place in the vestibule of the church where pictures and memorabilia of grandparents can be displayed, along with a tribute of thanks. Words such as these might be posted for guests to see: “On this happy day, we want to honor the heritage of our beloved grandparents who are now with the Lord.”

A tribute like this serves several purposes. It is a testimony of gratitude on the part of the bride and groom. This tribute is also a reminder that youth and strength do not last forever, and that we are all headed for the grave. It also emphasizes the Biblical importance of passing on the heritage of faith from generation to generation.
