Our Family Camp registrar, preparing for the week, contemplated the families coming to join us for this special time together. “Lord Jesus, please bring the right families together,” she breathed as she looked over the list of new families registered for Family Camp. She knew they represented more than just names on a page. The following testimony reveals the power of prayer.
Cheryl checked her watch; their flight was delayed. This past summer had been a journey of faith as her husband had died in June from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Now widowed and attempting to navigate single parenthood, Cheryl arrived in Big Sandy for Family Camp at midnight, without connections or established friendships.
Undaunted, the next morning she and her family joined the first activity, which was assembling booklets of John and Romans for distribution overseas. Unaware of the family’s challenges, the camp assistants warmly welcomed them. Cheryl’s heart was touched by their kindness and encouragement to her teens as they collated and boxed Scripture together. One of the ladies also accompanied her to the Moms’ Tea.
Surrounded by strangers, Cheryl was introduced to her camp host, with whom she felt an instant connection. As their conversation deepened, Cheryl was in awe that the Lord had brought her a friend who had walked through so many similar life situations, helping her feel heard and understood.
God continued weaving various interactions with others throughout the week. Dr. Lew Sterrett’s messages on leadership and parenting deeply ministered to her soul. An unexpected opportunity for conversation with him lifted a burden Cheryl didn’t even realize she had been carrying. God would be the Authority of their home! She could bring every question and challenging situation to Christ.
This family was just one of many we witnessed who had answers to prayer, underscoring our Family Camp theme, “His Way Is Perfect.” Each speaker highlighted God’s greater purposes in drawing us to Himself—even through setbacks, grief, and disappointments. With more than 1,100 guests at Family Camp, we were grateful to see God’s hand connecting families together to share love, fellowship, and Christ. Truly, “As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him” (Psalm 18:30).
