It was an eagerly anticipated event as families from around Australia gathered for the 15th Annual Family Conference at the Yarra Training Centre. From January 24 – 27, 2016, the 220 people attending were united by the purpose and theme of the conference – to “Draw Near to God” and experience the truth of His promise to draw near to us. Families who have attended past conferences look forward to the Scriptural teaching and encouraging fellowship that they know they will find as well as the well-structured programs for the children and young people. For young and old, all were hearing messages on the focus of drawing near to God.

Guest speaker Bob Newhouse and his wife Bethany travelled from the United States for the conference. They encouraged the families in their pursuit of the right target – fellowship with Jesus Christ. Bob’s messages were centered on spiritual truths, illustrating them through fascinating analogies from history and nature. Another homeschool father, and guest speaker, Norm Wakefield and his wife Alma, also flew in from the United States for the Family Conference. Norm shared a series of insightful and challenging messages on the Christian home educator’s anchor, confidence, purpose, and fullness – all based ultimately in Jesus Christ.

Lively discussions and fellowship was enjoyed around meal tables and over “cuppas” (Australian for “cups of tea”). One family commented, “Listening to the speakers renewed our family’s vision to stay close to God and to keep His Word in our hearts. We are more convinced than ever to homeschool the children and to plant the Word of God in their lives.” A father explained, “In the midst of all the trouble of our times, it is great to be blessed by being involved in an organization that the Lord has brought together for His glory. It is wonderful to be able to spend conference time sharing with one another.”
