The Word of God gives many examples of marriages from which can be drawn helpful practical lessons. The first couple in Scripture is, obviously, Adam and Eve! In a unique and special way, their marriage was truly a “match made in heaven.” Eve was created from Adam’s rib and made especially for him!

From the marriage of Adam and Eve, we learn several important lessons that we can apply to our own marriages.

Lessons from Adam

1. Your wife is your first priority in life. As you two are now one, she is “bone” of your bone and “flesh” of your flesh. In all the various duties of life, be sure to care for her first.
2. Be alert in protecting your wife. Endeavor to be aware of potential evil influences around her: what she sees, hears, and believes. Guard her as precious treasure and actively protect her from evil influences. She could be deceived by Satan himself, and you may not know it! Be vigilant and stay alert.
3. Spend valuable time together and teach her God’s commands. Commune with the Lord alone, but also have time together where you and your wife commune with Him. Be open with her and share with her what the Lord is teaching you from His Word.
4. Warning! Never let your wife convince you to do something that you know is against God’s Word and will.
5. Take responsibility for your own sin. Don’t blame your wife for your own disobedience or wrong choices.
6. Faithfully lead your family to God’s altar. Since the fall of man, sin and death are passed from generation to generation. Teach your family the importance of Christ’s atonement.
7. Encourage your wife and children. Assure them that they can resist the temptations of the devil now by submitting to God according to James 4:7, or they can safely flee from temptation according to I Corinthians 10:13. They can claim the ultimate hope that one day the Seed of the woman will crush the head of the serpent! 

Lessons from Eve 

1. You are created to be a helper uniquely suitable for your husband.
2. Know that your attire should honor God, honor your husband, and be a reminder of the blood atonement that God provided to cover sin. 
3. Do not trust your own reasoning, eyes, or own desires. All three can be faulty and will lead you astray from God and even from your husband.
4. Keep your husband informed regarding your friends, your influences, and what you are thinking. His role is to protect you, and you can help him fulfill his God-given role by being open with him.
5. Be alert to Satan’s lies, false teachings, or your possible yielding to temptation; if you are beguiled or disobedient to God, you can bring a curse upon your own family!
6. Never try to convince your husband to disobey God’s Word. This is especially true if you want to have him accompany you in disobeying God in order to ease your own conscience.
7. As the mother of the living, you have one of the most important and valuable privileges and responsibilities in all the world: the rearing of the next generation!
