King over All the Earth

God’s Unity in the Prophets

We live in a day where there is a concerted push for globalism of one kind or another. Rumors abound of a coming “one world order” where there will be global peace, a global monetary system, a global language, and a global governing body.

So far, all efforts at globalization have proven to be miserable failures. The League of Nations, devised after World War I, “the war to end all wars,” proved to be impotent to stop the rearmament of Germany, the terror of Communism, or the ravenous conquests of Imperial Japan. In spite of all the best efforts at global unity, World War II devastated the planet after only twenty years.

After World War II, a new attempt at a global peace-keeping organization was proposed, called the United Nations (UN). This governing body was established, and the member nations continue to meet every year, passing resolution after resolution that accomplishes little.

In spite of the most intensive efforts, wars have been fought all over the world in the eighty years since the founding of the UN. We are facing an international crisis of apocalyptic proportions with the struggle between the East and the West, as seen presently in the war between Ukraine and Russia, the delicate flashpoint of nuclear war in the Korean peninsula, the burgeoning military power of China, and the threat of a nuclear Iran looming over a Middle East that continues to simmer with deep religious and cultural divisions.

In the face of all these challenges, a “one world order” seems more distant and more elusive than ever before. Yet, the Bible speaks of a glorious day when the nations will be united under the Kingship of the Lord Jesus Christ. The only unifying factor in all of human history is Jesus Christ! He is the Prince of Peace. He is the King of kings. He is the Lord of lords. He is the only One Whose dominion is “from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth” (Psalm 72:8).

Bible scholars differ widely over exactly how, when, and where this universal dominion of Christ will take place. However, God’s Word plainly teaches that Jesus Christ is the only One in the universe Who has the authority and the ability to accomplish such a Kingdom.

The prophet Zechariah declared, “And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one” (Zechariah 14:9). Unity is an attribute of God. He is one, and His name is One. Thus, it follows that God brings unity to all that He governs.

One Government: “The LORD shall be king over all the earth”

The world has tried in vain to establish a one-world government. The Lord Jesus will be that Governor. The prophet Isaiah proclaimed of Christ, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).

What a day that will be when the government shall be upon His shoulder! According to Revelation 11:15, a great cry goes forth after the sounding of the seventh trumpet: “The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.”

One Religion: “In that day shall there be one LORD”

The world has sought vainly, not only for a universal government, but for a global religion. Various efforts have been and are being made to bring the religions of the world together into one multicultural amalgamation of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and the various eastern religions, such as Confucianism, Buddhism, and Hinduism. Various “experts” have asserted that these divisions of religions are unnecessary—that all these “ways to God” are equally valid and can be unified.

But there is no unity apart from the truth. The only world religion that has universal appeal, universal relevance, and the universal power of transformation is Biblical Christianity. In Revelation 7:9–10, the Apostle John described a universal worship service that we should all anticipate with great delight! “After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.”

One Name: “And his name one”

The name of the LORD is the one great unifying factor in the universe. The great “Shema” of Israel will one day be proclaimed, not just in Israel, but in the remotest corners of the globe. “The LORD our God is one LORD” (Deuteronomy 6:4).

What a great encouragement to our hearts that our Lord Jesus has reserved for Himself in that day a name that has never been tarnished by human lips! All the revealed names of God have been used, tragically, as curse words. But there is an unknown name that will one day be known and loved and sung by all!

In the majestic description of the Second Coming of our Lord, riding on a white horse from Heaven and coming to take up His rightful dominion, the Bible declares, “His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself” (Revelation 19:12).

What a day that will be! And what a name that will be! Each one of us who love the name of Jesus, no matter what eschatology (study of last things) that we personally hold, should joyfully anticipate the universal reign of Christ! May we each fervently pray the prayer of the Apostle John recorded in Revelation 22:20, “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”
